Kawagoe Festival (Kawagoe Matsuri)

Recognized on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Kawagoe Festival is one of the most breathtaking spectacles in the Greater Tokyo area. Dating back more than 370 years to the mid-17th century, the celebration brings the historic samurai and Edo merchant era vividly to life through the Kurazukuri warehouse district.

Over the third weekend of October, 29 towering, two-story ornate festival floats (dashi)—some soaring more than eight meters tall and topped with lifelike statues of legendary historical and mythological figures—glide majestically through the black-clay streets of Little Edo. The electrifying climax comes after sunset during the famous Hikkawase musical battles, where facing floats rotate their stages head-to-head and musicians fiercely trade festive flute and taiko drum melodies amidst hundreds of swaying paper lanterns.

Tamagawa Fireworks Festival

While summer is famous for pyrotechnics across Japan, Tokyo’s most scenic autumn fireworks display takes place along the banks of the Tama River. The Setagaya Tamagawa Fireworks Festival is held jointly with the Kawasaki City display on the opposite bank, firing over 12,000 fireworks into the crisp October night sky.

Spectators can spread out picnic blankets along the grassy riverbank to enjoy dramatic 10-go aerial shells, sweeping golden waterfall curtains, and rapid-fire music starmines synchronized to dynamic soundtracks. Framed by the illuminated Futako-Tamagawa high-rises and the cool autumn air, it offers a remarkably comfortable and romantic atmosphere compared to scorching summer shows.

Tokyo Yosakoi Festival (Fukuro Matsuri Part 2)

Every autumn, the energetic urban center of Ikebukuro explodes with color, music, and rhythmic clacking for the Tokyo Yosakoi Festival—the high-energy second half of the historic Fukuro Matsuri. Over 100 passionate dance troupes totaling more than 5,000 performers from all across Japan gather to compete in elaborate, high-speed choreography.

Dressed in magnificent traditional happi coats, sweeping kimonos, and face paint, teams dance vigorously through four street courses while clacking wooden naruko castanets to modern arrangements of Tokyo folk tunes and heavy taiko beats. The festival takes over the entire west exit of Ikebukuro Station and the open-air Global Ring amphitheater, creating an infectious, festive energy that captivates thousands of onlookers.

Asakusa Golden Dragon Dance (Kinryu no Mai)

Performed only twice a year in spring and autumn, the Golden Dragon Dance (Kinryu no Mai) is one of the most sacred and visually dramatic traditional rituals at Tokyo’s oldest temple, Sensō-ji. The dance honors the miraculous legend of Sensō-ji’s founding in 628 AD, when a golden dragon with scales of brilliant gold descended from heaven on the night the sacred Bodhisattva Kannon statue appeared in the Sumida River. Accompanied by solemn temple musicians, geisha playing traditional flutes and shamisen, and lotus-carrying maidens, eight skilled puppeteers guide an enormous 18-meter-long, 88-kilogram golden dragon as it twists, dives, and leaps dynamically across the main temple plaza. Believed to bestow good fortune and ward off misfortune, this rare spectacle offers visitors an extraordinary glimpse into centuries-old Buddhist pageantry.
